The Swabian Forest

Schwaebisxcher Wald

Location

The Swabian-Franconian Forest in the northeast of the region is its largest stretch of woodland, covering a total area of 904 sq.km. It comprises the five natural landscapes of the Welzheim, Murrhardt and Mainhardt forests and the Waldenburg and Löwenstein mountains.

Overview

It is known as the "Green Lung" of the Stuttgart region - The Swabian Forest. Rambling valleys and immeasurably dark coniferous woodlands typify the scenery. The Swabian Forest is a veritable paradise for individualists who prefer solitary forest walks and are in search of peace and quiet. There are innumerable, well-signposted hiking trails leading through the woods and meadows, ridges, grottos and rock formations which are so characteristic of the Swabian Forest.

In Roman times, the Upper Germanic Limes with its earthworks, ditches and palisades formed one of the main boundaries. Important relics from this period, such as the fascinating Ostkastell (East Fort) in Welzheim, which is now part of the Archeological Park there, many watchtower ruins and the reconstructed watchtower near Grosserlach-Grab, give impressive insights into the region's Roman past.

In summer the artificial lakes are a particularly popular feature, ideal for bathing and relaxation. The loveliest and best known of these is probably the Ebnisee.

Besides walking and culture, visitors can choose the whole year round from a host of leisure activities, including tennis, cycling, covered wagon rides, golf or horseriding.

The Carl Schweizer Museum in Murrhardt is a private institution which presents the nature and culture of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park and the Stuttgart region. Indigenous fauna, but in particular also European fauna (birds and mammals), are displayed in large, realistic dioramas. Adjoining the museum is also a large history section documenting the Roman and monastic eras. In the Roman collection monuments, altars and the reconstruction of the plinth of a Jupiter column are on display. The exhibition on local history comprises the history of both the town and the monastery.
